    Review of Three Recent Randomized Trials of School-Based Mentoring: Making Sense of Mixed Findings

    In this article the authors examine three recent studies of school-based mentoring: a 2007 Big Brothers Big Sisters of America study of school-based mentoring in affiliate agencies, a 2008 study of school-based mentoring in Communities In Schools of San Antonio, Texas (CIS-SA), and the US Department of Education’s fateful 2009 study of the School Mentoring Program (SMP). The authors reveal important differences across the studies in several areas including program models, implementation fidelity and support, and criteria used in tests of statistical significance.

    Tuning In to Local Labor Markets: Findings From the Sectoral Employment Impact Study

    This study found that participants of industry-specific or sectoral job training efforts were more likely to find employment, work more consistently, work in jobs that paid higher wages, and work in jobs that offered benefits than those participants in traditional job skills training programs. This report details strategies used by the three organizations studied (an employer/union association, a social venture, and a human service organization) and outlines common elements that likely contributed to their success.
